Our Approach
We listen to what our customers want and offer a range of options that deliver excellence and value for money.
We encourage our schools and settings to make the most of the service we provide, but there is no ‘take it or leave it’ mentality. We have a menu of options and we love the challenge of developing new approaches too.
OUR APPROACH
Our over-arching aim is to equip staff in schools and settings to confidently take ownership of identifying and managing children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication difficulties (SLCN)
We work to the pyramid model, offering a range of (both prevention & intervention) strategies and approaches at universal, targeted and specialist levels. The tools we use may differ according to type and severity of SLCN – but our approach is similar.
We work with our schools and settings to jointly identify priorities
Prevention & Intervention
Raise attainment by taking ownership of speech and language development from the start.
Needs can be met by staff. Therapists have a role to ensure that initiatives get off to the best possible start and are embedded across the setting.
Here are some examples:
- Universal screening tools
- Total communication environment
- Vocabulary support
- Advice to information, advice & resources
- Parent/carer initiatives
Best Practice
A whole-setting awareness of a range of strategies and interventions used to support communication and access to learning for everyone.
Some specific needs are identified. Strategies and interventions introduced at tier 1 are developed and extended.
On-going targeted training and support for staff working with children with more complex communication needs.
Here are some examples:
- Some direct therapy for individuals or groups: assessment, advice and/or programmes
- information, advice & resources
- help with measuring impact
Best Practice
Staff develop additional skills to be able to use more specialist strategies
A high level of specific needs (children require the skills of a therapist in order to achieve their potential)
Here are some examples:
- Specialist assessment
- Hands-on therapy sessions and/or individual programmes
- Contribution to planning and review meetings
- Identification and delivery of specialist training
- Information, advice & resources
Best Practice
Timely access to a speech and language therapist
